Porter and Son Seed Company
Stephenville, Texas

Research into the history of the Porter and Son Seed Company has just been started.  If anyone has additional information or historical items to donated to the library and archive, please contact us.

Porter & Son Seed Company was a regional seed provider founded by V. O. Porter in 1912.  Although he was not trained as a plant breeder or geneticist, he became well known for his tomato introductions that were uniquely suited for hot, dry, desert climates.  He also worked with, and introduced watermelons.

V. O. Porter's son Gene worked along side his father until V. O.'s death in 1955. Gene died in 1990 and the operation of the business passed to Gene's daughter Alice. Alice closed the store on November 15, 1994.

Introductions:

  1. Tomato, 'Porter'

  2. Tomato, 'Porter's Pride' (also sold as 'Improved Porter')
